Computers in Language and Literacy Work.
Leonard, Janet
This book surveys currently available software for English language learners and identifies future directions in the development of such software that are likely to prove fruitful. Discussed first are ways in which computers add to the learning experience. Stand-alone programs are compared with authoring systems, and "purpose-made" and "borrowed" software and software for students and teachers are contrasted. Discussed next are the following types of software currently available for English language learners: alphabet-based, letter-word manipulation, word-based, text-based, database and rule, structure-based, adventure game, simulation and role play, creative writing aid, and "total-package" programs. The next chapters deal with increasing the range of programs in the Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) programs: making them more user friendly; selecting appropriate currently available and future hardware for use with CALL programs; involving English-as-a-foreign-language, English-as-a-second-language, and literacy teachers in CALL program development; and making the most of CALL opportunities. Appended to the book are a list of acronyms, bibliography, directory of CALL programs, directory of software publishers, and list of useful addresses. (MN)
