A Pictorial Test Assessing Aural-Vocabulary of Arabic-Speaking Children at Kindergarten and Early Primary Levels.
Khammash, Salma B.
This paper presents the development of the Arabic Picture Vocabulary Test (APVT), derived from the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised, for use in assessing the aural-vocabulary of newly arrived limited English proficiency children, from kindergarten through grade three, whose first language is Arabic. The APVT, an individually administered norm-referenced power test was designed for students who have normal sight and hearing, and who understand Modern Standard Arabic to some degree. The 150 item test, arranged in order of increasing difficulty, consists of a page of pictures which together with a spoken word constitutes a test item. The task is to identify a picture that best illustrates the stimulus word meaning. Testing requires 20 to 30 minutes and is scored during administration. The APVT, translated and adapted to Arabic, was validated and standardized in Jordan on a representative sample of 2,900 students (1,450 girls, 1,450 boys). Raw scores were converted to age-referenced norms. Test-retest reliabilities were considered to be an unbiased estimate of reliabilities of the corresponding standard score equivalents. Field testing of the APVT is currently underway in the Dearborn Public Schools (Michigan), in an attempt to cross validate the APVT. (Author/PN)
