An Evaluation of the Gifted Program at Mellon Junior High School.
Dunbar, Donald A.; Salazar, Irene M.
The Gifted and Talented Program (GAT) of the Mellon Junior High School, Mt. Lebanon School District, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, was evaluated in 1985. Questionnaires were sent to 139 parents and 50 academic teachers. In addition, 9 teachers, 4 administrators, and 12 parents were interviewed. Responses were summarized in detail regarding 14 topics, including: meeting gifted students' needs, motivation, staff knowledge of student needs and the GAT plan, usefulness of the individual educational programs, student progress reports, mainstreaming, curriculum objectives, parents' satisfaction, provision of enrichment, use of Coordinator's and Librarian's services, and providing for underachievers. It was concluded that parents desired more visible evidence of the GAT program's implementation. They also suggested increased individualized projects, parent-teacher communication, and extracurricular activities. Teachers generally felt the program was being implemented, and welcomed inservice sessions on daily concerns. Both groups felt that improved individualized educational programs would be valuable. (Extensive appendices include the interview and questionnaire instruments, program descriptions, and program plans.) (GDC)
