Gender differences among mid-level administrators in higher education is considered, based on a review of research. Attention is directed to research in three areas: (1) socialization of women and men to work and career patterns, (2) characteristics of higher education administrators, and (3) characteristics of the institutional climate and its effect on gender. Methodological issues and suggestions for future research are also addressed. Specific research concerns include: achievement motivation issues; leadership as an expression of achievement; factors that affect the socialization of women to work in high levels of the professions; number of women in higher education administration, where they are located, and what kinds of positions; demographic factors; perceptions and evaluations of their work; skills of mid-level managers; problems and issues; cultural spheres affecting academic life and the use of historical analysis to understand the power that brought about changes; an institution's internal personnel procedures for equity, selection, hiring, stereotyping, and mentoring; and how an institution deals with problems, issues, and changes. Methodological issues include: subjects, measures, kinds of comparisons, settings, demographic factors, and interaction between the role of culture and institution.
