Geographic and Institutional Origin of Arkansas College Students, Fall 1984. Report 84-6.
Davoren, Donna Christian
Information on the geographic and institutional origins of students at 32 Arkansas state and private colleges and universities in the fall 1980 is presented in tabular, geographic, and narrative form. Although the number of full-time, entering students from both Arkansas and out-of-state has declined, their proportions have remained relatively constant: 84% in-state and 14% out-of-state (excluding U.S. territories and foreign countries). A total of 57,677 in-state undergraduates registered at Arkansas institutions during fall 1984, down 820 from fall 1983. Undergraduates from other states decreased by 2.7%. Arkansas college students relocated among the various institutions less in 1984 than in the previous fall semester: 3,713 compared to 3,973. More students transferred into Arkansas institutions from institutions out-of-state during fall 1984 than fall 1983. The number of graduate students in Arkansas universities rose considerably over fall 1983. The 12% rise is a direct result of public school teachers returning to campuses to fulfill requirements of the Teacher Testing Law. First-professional enrollment dropped 1.9%. Arkansas counties with large populations and those containing public institutions have the highest participation rates. (SW)
