Mathematics, Science, and Computer Education, Grades 7-12. A Report on the New Hampshire Mathematics and Science Education 1983 Status Survey.
Ewert, William B.; Prevost, Fernand J.
All public schools in New Hampshire that contain any of the grades from 7 to 12 were surveyed in early 1983 to determine the status of mathematics, science, and computer science education. Questionnaires, designed to obtain information on courses and enrollments as well as on teachers and teaching assignments in these three areas, were mailed to 180 schools. This report is based on full and complete data from the questionnaires prepared by personnel at these schools. It is divided into three parts. Part I provides general information on the schools and teachers included in the survey. Part II addresses mathematics and computer science education. Part III addresses science education. Parts II and III are divided into sections that present data on courses offered, enrollments in selected courses, and qualifications of staff. In addition, each of these latter two parts concludes with recommendations which are specific to New Hampshire and are directly related to the statistics presented. Among the recommendations offered are those suggesting that all schools teach algebra in grade 8, that all improperly endorsed mathematics and science teachers begin formal programs leading to full certification and that computers should be used in the teaching and learning of science.
