Widening Horizons: Using Community Resources in the Education of Gifted Students.
New York State Education Dept., Albany. Gifted Education.
The manual is designed to encourage school districts to use community resources to expand educational opportunities for gifted students. Suggestions for planning such community enrichment programs address locating and screening resources, developing community relationships, and integrating resources into the instructional program. Examples of ways in which several districts use community resources are presented, including a mentor program, a program featuring student convocations, a program featuring internships and mentorships at a local observatory, a three-district co-operative program providing enrichment to elementary gifted students, a program using the resources of the New York State Museum, and programs using college resources. Appendixes include a guide to developing and using learning contracts, two resource lists, an outline of mentor program roles, and a survey for locating community resources. (CL)
