Nuclear War Media and Firebreaks II: An Experimental Study.
Mayton, Daniel M., II
Ground Zero is an organization whose intent is to provide factual information on nuclear war issues. Ground Zero has published a simulation called "Firebreaks II: A War-Peace Game" about the ways nuclear war might be prevented. The impact of Firebreaks II on college students' attitudes was assessed in 79 student volunteers of whom 40 percent were male and 60 percent were female. The experiment used a four-group posttest only design with subjects randomly assigned to either one of the two treatment conditions, an active control condition, or a passive control condition. The first treatment subjects completed the Firebreaks simulation, the second viewed filmstrips on nuclear war issues, the active control subjects viewed filmstrips on family issues, and the passive control subjects received only the posttest. The results indicated that subjects who completed Firebreaks II did not report attitudes towards nuclear freeze and other conditions which were statistically different from the control group. Subjects who viewed the nuclear war issues filmstrip treatment did report attitudes more supportive of a nuclear freeze than did the other groups. (ABL)
