Evaluating Mental Health Services for Southeast Asian Refugees: Cross-Cultural Methodological Issues.
Robinson, Beatrice E.
The study evaluates the effectiveness of two bilingual, non-traditional mental health peer counseling type programs providing services to Southeast Asian refugees in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area. This area has the second highest per capita rate of Southeast Asians in the nation and as these refugees have, in general, experienced a great deal of emotional trauma, chronic stress, personal hardship, and family disruption prior to resettlement, they are frequently in need of mental health facilities to treat depression and anxiety, situational disorientation, and grief reactions. The study sample consisted of the 150 clients entering the two programs from July 1983 through December 1984. The evaluation instruments included a 70-item problem checklist for the counselors to fill out; a 20-item depression scale for cross-cultural use; and a background information form which gathered information on the clients' previous experiences including traumas and stresses, previous mental health history, proficiency with English, and various sociodemographic indicators. Preliminary results indicate that factors such as income, employment, age, length of treatment, English ability, and length of time in the United States do not appear to be related to treatment outcome. Ethnic group, receiving government assistance, and a number of traumatic experiences were tenuously related to outcome for one of the two agencies. It is concluded that treatment outcome is very hard to relate to client variables and further analysis of the data is needed. The paper includes extensive tables outlining the findings. (CG)
