Building Our American Communities: National FFA Annual Report - 1985.

Achievements of the Building Our American Communities Program (BOAC), initiated in 1971 to provide a vehicle for Future Farmers of America members to make direct contributions to their communities and to practice good citizenship and develop leadership skills, are summarized in this 1985 annual report. the report begins with messages from President Ronald Reagan, J. Tyler Wilson (Chairman of R.J. Reynolds Industries, Inc., corporate sponsor of BOAC), and Secretary of Agriculture John R. Block. Projects of the Marion County (West Virginia) chapter, national winner, are reviewed, including their efforts in promoting progress in tourism, sponsoring a community pride contest, and conducting beautification projects. Activities of the second place national winner chapter (Avon Park, Florida) are described, including construction of a fairground hog barn, completion of 63 home improvement projects, and development of forest and ecological demonstration areas. Projects of 35 Gold Medal Chapters from 20 states are outlined. Projects ranged from constructing baby animal farm buildings at a county fairground, landscaping community sites, and renovating historic buildings to obtaining blood donors, compiling county organization directories, and conducting parties for the handicapped. Silver and Bronze emblem winning chapters and all participating BOAC chapters are listed. Names and addresses of the 26-member BOAC National Advisory Committee are provided. (NEC)
