TEX-SIS Research Report, Spring 1985.
Montemayor, J. Joaquin; And Others
In January 1985, Glendale Community College (GCC) began a student follow-up system of data collection called TEX-SIS (Texas Student Information System) designed to evaluate instruction as well as student satisfaction with programs. Five major areas dealing with students were studied: student educational intent, student withdrawal (course, college, and walk-off), non-returning students, graduate follow-up, and employer follow-up. Surveys were conducted from late fall 1984 to June 30, 1985, with the number of survey respondents varying from 9 to 3,352. Highlighted findings included the following: (1) of the respondents to the student educational intent survey (N=3,352), 51% identified preparation for a new job and/or improvement of existing job skills as their primary objectives; (2) respondents to the withdrawal survey included 138 students who withdrew from classes (primarily for personal reasons); 282 students who withdrew from college (primarily because of conflicting job hours) and 9 students who disappeared from class or the college without officially withdrawing; (3) the non-returning students survey indicated that former students (N=319) were satisfied with the college's services, with highest ratings given to quality of instruction and library services; (4) the graduate follow-up survey revealed many similarities between graduates and non-returning students; (5) 81% of the 444 responding graduates rated their university preparatory work as "satisfactory" or "excellent"; (6) the average annual salary for non-returning students was $23,484, while that for graduates was $21,688; and (7) 88% of the 91 employers who responded to the follow-up survey gave an overall rating of "good" or "very good" to former GCC students. Survey instruments are included. (LAL)
