Computers in the Schools: A Follow-Up Report.

To update a 1984 study of the status and use of microcomputers in Jackson and Josephine Counties (Oregon), revised questionnaires were distributed to the 82 schools contacted in the initial survey. Two forms were used: school and individual teacher. The school survey addressed makes and models of computers in the building, locations of the computers, management programs being used, district office connections, resource people, staff training needs, use of classified staff, adult education, curriculum integration, and implementation of software. The teacher survey sought information in the areas of teacher training, use of computers, training needs, and student use of computers. Based on 64 responses (77%), findings indicate the presence of 763 microcomputers in the schools, a significant increase over the 1984 total (607). Apple was the most common computer brand (58%) used and 49% of the microcomputers were located in computer laboratories. Of the 1,013 individual staff members who responded, 74% reported they could load and run a computer program; 55% had received formal training in computer literacy. Instruction accounted for 62% of all actual and desired computer use (the survey question was inadvertantly ambiguous). The emphasis was on computer assisted instruction for drill and practice at all levels. The primary language being taught was BASIC, followed by Logo. The area of the curriculum in which computers were most used was math in both elementary (81%) and secondary (85%) schools. Approaches to evaluating, acquiring, distributing, and storing software varied greatly. Three areas of teacher training needs emerged as important: computer literacy, "hands-on" time with the computer, and assistance with software evaluation.
