Development of a Design for Evaluation of the Podiatric Medicine Training Grant Program. Final Report and Executive Summary.
American Association of Colleges of Podiatric Medicine, Washington, DC.; Mandex, Inc., Vienna, VA.
Information is presented on an evaluation design for a federal program, the Podiatric Medicine Training Grant Program. The program supports the clinical training of third- and fourth-year podiatric medical students in underserved areas. Background information is provided on: the supply and distribution of health professionals and podiatrists in particular; the nation's colleges of podiatric medicine, and podiatry training sites in three states funded by this project (Iowa, Pennsylvania, and California). For seven short-term and two long-term program objectives, information is provided on hypotheses concerning the grant program, proposed evaluation strategies, the analysis plan, available baseline data, and recommendations for future evaluation. Data were collected using mail surveys or personal interviews for several target groups: podiatry school applicants from shortage areas, patients at remote site clinics, college faculty and college/high school career advisors in areas served by remote clinics, recent graduates practicing in shortage areas, and clinical trainees and their supervisors at remote sites. Appended are the data collection instruments: survey forms for applicants, patients, faculty and career advisors, and recent graduates; and interview guides for clinical trainees and clinical supervisors.
