This study measured the self-esteem of 312 female elementary school teachers in the Chattagnooga area public schools, and identified their perceptions of selected job-related factors that contribute to their self-esteem. The questionnaire consisted of three parts. Part one requested demographic information. Part two consisted of the Barksdale "Self-Esteem Evaluation No. 69." The third part sought to identify characteristics of job-related factors connected with teaching. Findings indicated: (1) personal goals, feelings of competency, pride in work, evaluation by the principal, opportunity to help children and determine own materials showed the least discrepancies between the present amount and the ideal presence; (2) prestige of the teaching profession and credit for a job well done were among characteristics where the largest discrepancies were found; and (3) feelings of competency, success, and pride related more to aspects over which teachers had some control. An analysis of findings is presented and recommendations are made for improving teachers' self-esteem.
