Head Start: A Promise for Alaska's Children and Families.
Smith, Barbara J.
In fiscal year 1983 nearly 1,500 Alaskan children under the age of 6 received Head Start services from a total of 262 staff members--149 of whom were classroom personnel--and 1,473 volunteers. Over 700 Head Start children received medical screening, and more than 100 needed and received medical treatment through Head Start. Over 800 Head Start children received dental exams, and more than 200 needed and completed dental treatment. Alaska Head Start programs enrolled and provided special services to 164 children with a variety of handicapping conditions. A total of 1,094 families received services from Head Start. The State of Alaska currently provides 40% of the Alaska Headstart funds, a significant contribution which is used to improve the overall quality of services to children and families as well as to meet the costs of providing Headstart services in rural and remote Alaska, e.g., fuel and transportation costs, materials to meet local cultural needs, and the purchase of medical and other support services. Increased funding is needed for Headstart to serve children currently on waiting lists, increase training opportunities for staff and volunteers, and purchase or construct Head Start facilities.
