Unionization in ARL Libraries. SPEC Kit 118.
Lynden, Frederick C.
To gather data on the extent and nature of union activities in Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member institutions, the Systems and Procedures Exchange Center (SPEC) developed a two-page survey which was distributed in April 1985 to the entire membership. ARL libraries were asked about degree of past and current unionization, types of unions and numbers of affected staff, contract negotiation issues, issues covered in contracts, incidence of recent strikes, and changes in management practices in a union environment. Responses from 95 of 117 libraries (81%) indicate that unions have increased over the past 10 years as compared with earlier SPEC survey results. This kit presents the results of the survey, including tallies and listings of labor relations representatives, types and nature of unions, and names of unions at ARL institutions. Also included are three complete sample contracts for professional librarians from the University of Alberta, Boston University, and the University of California, and four complete sample contracts for support staff from the New York Public Library, the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, and the University of Washington. The ALA (American Library Association) Collective Bargaining Statement and a bibliography are included. (THC)
