Student Uses of the Annenberg/CPB Telecourses in the Fall of 1984. Executive Summary and Final Research Report.
Crane, Valerie
Research was conducted to examine student response to the fall 1984 Annenberg/CPB (Corporation for Public Broadcasting) telecourse experience and to determine factors that influenced students' decisions to take and/or drop the course, how they used the materials available to them, how effective they found these materials to be, and how this course experience compared to other college course experiences. Course use was examined in three ways: focus study sessions, study logs maintained by students, and a telephone survey of those who dropped the courses. A total of 200 students in 26 institutions participated in the study of 5 courses: (1) Brain, Mind and Behavior; (2) The Write Course; (3) The Constitution: That Delicate Balance; (4) The New Literacy; and (5) Congress: We the People. The first of two sections in this document provides an executive summary of the study, which includes conclusions and recommendations, a summary of the study's findings, and its research methodology. The second section contains the final research report, which presents data on: (1) participants' college enrollment status; (2) Annenberg/CPB telecourse enrollment patterns; (3) students' experiences with the telecourses; (4) the role of the institution in the telecourse experience; (5) assessment of the telecourse materials; (6) overall course assessment; and (7) questionnaire responses.
