The nature and extent of conditions or barriers that inhibit women administrators in their professional responsibilities and careers were studied. A questionnaire mailed to 241 women was completed by 168 women with executive, administrative, and managerial responsibilities in nine universities of the State University System of Florida. The respondents primarily had middle- and lower-level administrative positions. The questionnaire covered 23 possible barriers and their effects on professional development needs, administrative styles, and future aspirations; respondent's background was also noted. Predictors of experiencing barriers were also considered, along with the impact of barriers on women administrators. Of the 23 barriers, 19 were experienced by 50% or more of the respondents. Specific findings include: 87% of the female respondents believed that informal networks excluded them; 87% indicated that they worked twice as hard as their male colleagues; 79% believed they were less influential on superiors' decisions; and 74% felt it was difficult to receive recognition for their accomplishments. Barriers were also found to: create or distort a woman's need for certain professional skills; prompt women to alter and experiment with their administrative style; and influence career changes and aspirations.
