The Many Faces of Foreign Language in the Elementary School: FLES, FLEX, and Immersion.
Lipton, Gladys C., Ed.; And Others
Examples of four kinds of elementary school programs in second language instruction are described: eight Foreign Language in the Elementary School (FLES) programs, one Foreign Language Experience or Foreign Language Exploration (FLEX) program, one partial immersion program, and one total immersion program. An introductory section provides generally accepted definitions of the program types and characteristics, and a chart outlines the general goals and amount of class time spent per week in each. Each program description is accompanied by a chart noting the program type, language(s) taught, methodology and classroom activities, emphasis given each of the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing), materials used, teacher characteristics, student characteristics, and program articulation with the upper grades. Most programs provide instruction in French and/or Spanish, but other languages taught include German, Japanese, Modern Greek, Polish, Russian, Italian, Serbocroatian, Latin, Korean, and others, depending on teacher availability. A prefatory section also describes the functions and activities of the FLES Exploratory Commission of the American Association of Teachers of French. (MSE)
