Implementation of a Videotape Program for Regular Classroom Teachers Involved in Mainstreaming.
Patrylo, Carole A.
A 20-minute-long videotape program, intended for regular classroom teachers involved in mainstreaming, was developed and implemented to meet in-service needs of elementary school teachers in Cherry Hill, a township in Camden County, New Jersey. Included in the videotape program were an explanation of Public Law 94-142; an overview of the decision process and preparation needed to mainstream a student; a discussion of issues that regular teachers felt should be addressed prior to and during the mainstreaming process; a panel discussion involving three regular elementary teachers and a special education teacher; and a bibliography for teachers citing books and articles concerning aspects of mainstreaming. Goals of the practicum were to survey regular elementary classroom teachers about specific issues that should be addressed in the mainstreaming process; to develop and implement the in-service videotape program; to reduce teacher fear and reluctance to accept a mainstreamed student; and to evaluate the effectiveness of the program. Aproximately 50 teachers viewed the videotape and responded to pre- and posttest measures of attitude and knowledge. Results suggest that exposure to the videotape program produced significant changes in the attitude and understanding of the participating teachers. (RH)
