Educating the Imagination.
Cowperthwaite, Gordon
At Sinclair Community College (SCC) in Dayton, Ohio, a series of holistic education courses, called Education for Work/Life Actualization, was designed to offer students new skills for the development of self-esteem, empathy, creativity, intuition, centeredness, clarity of values, communication, nutrition, and preventative self-help health care. These courses were developed around several basic tenets of holistic education, including: (1) human potential is unlimited; (2) the function of education is the self-actualization of the individual; (3) enhanced self-awareness is critical to achieving potential; and (4) in a stressful, rapid change society, stability and health should be nurtured. Education for Work/Life Actualization is divided into a series of one-credit, experiential and interactive modules: Life/Career Focusing I and II, Pathways to Creative Power, Creating Your Own Health and Well-Being, Creating Rewarding Relationships, and Creating Your Own Actualization. This description of the Education for Work/Life Actualization includes an extensive review of the literature on holistic education, as well as information on the rationale for and development of the course sequence at SCC, the courses, and the methods and findings of a study conducted at the college to determine what effect the holistic education courses had upon adult students. Numerous tables illustrate the research data. (EJV)
