School Library Development: Unesco Workshop on Training Courses for Teachers and Teacher Librarians. South Pacific Region. Contribution to the Development of Information Infrastructures.
Trask, Margaret
As part of the Unesco School Library Development Project in the South Pacific, a selected group of librarians and a coordinator of extension studies from the region met with Unesco consultants to design and develop a general course or courses for teachers and teacher librarians on the design, production, use, and organization of learning materials. A consultant initially briefed the group on the Unesco project, and then addressed what the participants saw as their most important need--advice on the present Certificate in Librarianship Programme offered by the University of the Pacific (Fiji) through its extension services. Working discussions were held each day followed by preparation of documentation for further discussion; interviews were held with relevant individuals; an assessment was made of existing courses and related resources for the University of the South Pacific library education program; and course proposals were presented, discussed, refined, and endorsed by the Working Group. Recommendations by the consultants were also discussed and adopted. The many issues discussed were concerned with three major areas: book production and reading, existing library services, and available resources and outside aid. In addition to a description of the workshop proceedings, this report includes course proposals, recommendations, and guidelines for the development of library education in the South Pacific region. Appendices include a description of the present program for the University of the South Pacific certificate and details of proposed revisions, as well as lists of workshop participants, working discussion sessions, persons interviewed, and materials consulted during the workshop.
