This paper describes one academic's experiences in utilizing a database management system, dBase II, with an Apple IIe microcomputer for record keeping and reporting. Initial problems created by processing data by hand or by a central computer system are described, and the selection process for a microcomputer purchase and software package (dBase II) is explained. Specific methods of storing and retrieving data using dBase II are presented, including the structure of the database, information storage limitations of dBase II, and field definitions for student files. Also described are methods for updating existing files. Corresponding appendices include sample raw data displays for specific information needs, such as generating a list of students by race, sex, degree requirements, or quarter exited; methods of locating a file with both limited and more specific information; and a list of student advisees for the year.
