[Child Language Data Exchange System.]
MacWhinney, Brian, Ed.
Transcript Analysis, v1 n1 p2-18 Aug 1984
The background, rationale, elements, and organization of the newly-formed Child Language Data Exchange System (CHILDES) database containing child language data-transcripts are outlined in this first issue of their newsletter. The system was formed in response to a need for greater efficiency in data sharing, greater precision in data collection and analysis, and increased automation in analysis in child language studies, and consists of computerized corpora of child language. The shape of the database is described, including detailed coding information, analyses that can be performed with the available software, and limitations and problems. Appended is the first article in the second issue: "Archiving Data Sets: Issues and Problems," by Catherine E. Snow, which also provides background on the CHILDES system. (MSE)
