The efficiency and appropriateness of the cassette tape as a data collection medium was considered in this survey. A 19-item questionnaire was mailed to 117 agricultural teacher educators who had served at foreign locations. Most of the questions solicited qualitative data about their experiences, problems, and accomplishments. Respondents were sent the questionnaire and a blank cassette tape, with instructions that responses be recorded on the tape. Four follow-ups resulted in a 97 percent response rate. Reactions to the taping were solicited. Responses were: (1) it saved respondents' time; (2) it was useful for gathering large amounts of information; (3) respondents felt more at ease to disclose information; (4) it allowed more time to think before responding; (5) it was efficient and encouraged response; and (6) the uniqueness of the approach was appreciated. Some problems which were reported involved the time required to transcribe, review, and analyze the data. Other concerns included being quoted out of context and misinterpretation of what the respondent really meant. It was also found that this method cannot be successful unless all persons have working tape recorders and usable tapes. The audio cassette method was recommended for qualitative data collection.
