Iowa History Month, 1985.
Nielsen, Lynn E.
This guide contains activity ideas to help elementary and secondary students celebrate Iowa History Month, October, 1985. There are four major sections. The first section contains an historic calendar for the month of October. Each day focuses on a significant occurrence in Iowa history and provides specific suggestions for discussing the events. The activities are appropriate for grades 5-12. Section II provides several class and community activity ideas that are adaptable to the particular needs and level of the class. For example, students design posters on the theme "Iowa Then and Today," make cornhusk dolls, arrange a store window display, or make a community quilt. The third section provides the names, addresses, and phone numbers of groups that provide materials for teaching Iowa history. This section also contains a sample of the "Teachers Guide to a History of Iowa," developed by a project funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. The fourth section contains the "Building Coordinators Fund Raising Guide," intended to help individual schools undertake fund raising projects for the new Iowa Historical Building. (RM)
