Results of a national survey of state involvement in intergenerational programs are reported. Following a preface, material is presented in three main sections. Section I, "The Landscape of Intergenerational Programs," presents an overview of the main categories of programs throughout the country. Survey responses indicate that all 50 states have ongoing intergenerational programs in which education is a central focus. Thirty-seven of 45 responding states indicated that the most frequent intergenerational activity is health and human service-related. A third category of programs is described as unclassified and includes such activities as adopt-a-grandparent. Section II, "The Context of Need," considers the environment necessary for successful intergenerational programs. Considered are changing population profiles, the impact of technology, family policy, and political climate. Section III, "To Build a New House," presents an overall structure for intergenerational programs. The precepts emphasized are the importance of community, including in-between generations, the principle of reciprocity, using a variety of approaches, and providing a human touch. Two appendices contain a questionnaire and a summary of state responses to the survey. (LP)
