A profile of the extent of English usage and instruction in Mexico gives an overview of the following elements: its role and status alongside Spanish and within the educational system at all levels; teacher education; program accreditation; required reading skills; the supply and professional support of English teachers; the type and availability of instructional materials; educational administration and planning related to English teaching; English instruction outside the educational system; British and American support for English instruction; British commercial opportunities for production of books, videotapes, computer hardware and software, and courses; creative writing; and current language research. The conclusion is that English remains the most important foreign language in Mexico, and that its future is assured as long as American economic influence continues. It is suggested that if British English is to maintain its importance, the British role in English language instruction must be augmented. (MSE)
