Oklahoma State Dept. of Education, Oklahoma City.
Intended for teachers who would like to correlate creative writing with creative ideas and activities, this publication presents ideas that will serve as springboards to other creative ideas and activities. Consisting of six main sections, each containing an introduction, the first section of the book presents: a statement of purpose; a discussion of creative writing and teaching writing; an outline of writing stages; a process approach to creative writing; discussion of the role of grammar instruction, motivating reluctant writers, overcoming writer's block, and evaluating student work; and a list of editors' marks. The second section, for grades K-3, contains a message to kindergarten teachers, instructional activities, and a list of pattern/predictable language books. The third section, for grades 4-6, contains activities and ideas, story starters, story endings, and a section on making lists. The fourth section, for grades 7-9, presents activities, ideas and starters, while the fifth section, for Grades 10-12 deals with activities and ideas, journal writing, creative writing connected to literature, and a literary crossword puzzle. The last section discusses bulletin boards and learning centers. Appendixes contain material about brainstorming, "word walls" (such as color, sight, taste, and feeling words), connecting children's literature and creative writing, sources that publish student writing, the Carlson analytical originality scale, a description of a writing practice period, discussion of teacher and writer conferences, ideas for a young authors' conference, 18 rules for good writing, a bibliography, and a list of resources.
