A Writing and Research Guide.
Alicna, Elaine; And Others
Intended for use by secondary school English teachers and school librarians, this teaching guide provides lesson plans for instruction pertaining to library and research skills. The first section presents lessons to improve library skills. The five lessons cover (1) the organization and arrangement of the library, (2) the card catalog, (3) reference materials and indexes, (4) parts of books, and (5) developing a bibliography. Appendixes contain examples of front and back matter, reference materials, and tables and graphs referred to in the lessons. Section two presents lessons to improve critical reading skills. The 12 lessons are designed to develop students' ability to distinguish between fact and opinion, identify propaganda and persuasion, predict plausible outcomes from a written passage, identify explicit and implicit cause and effect in written passages, and identify the author's point of view in written passages. The third section contains lessons for a research paper project and an example of a model research paper, while the fourth and fifth sections provide lessons to improve composition and practical writing skills, including organizing paragraphs, correction marks, applications and forms, and business and personal letters. Appendixes in the fifth section include examples of forms and letters. (HTH)
