Adolescent Suicide Awareness Training Manual.
Appel, Yetta H.; And Others
This training manual is intended for use by school personnel, especially at the secondary school level, who must deal directly with suicidal behavior among students. Guidelines are presented for dealing with the reactions of a school system to an actual suicide and for dealing with the return to school of a student following a suicide attempt. An overview of adolescent suicide is provided which includes a statistical profile of adolescent suicide and brief discussions of 15 myths about suicide. Some crises experienced in puberty and adolescence are discussed. This manual is not designed to train school personnel to treat the suicidal adolescent, but rather to aid personnel in the identification of students who may be suicidally prone. An intervention approach is described which, beginning with identification of at-risk students, moves on to suggest ways of: (1) linking these students and their families to appropriate mental health and community resources; (2) working with the parents and the community; and (3) working with the students in an educational context. A four-page bibliography of recommended books, journal articles, and film strips is included. (NRB)
