In 1983-1984 the adult literacy program in the State of New York served 78,195 adults. Fifty-one percent were female, 17 percent had completed less than 5 years of formal education, 24 percent considered a language other than English as their native language, 46 percent were between the ages of 16 and 24, 42 percent were between the ages of 25 and 44, 26 percent were black, another 26 percent were Hispanic, and 38 percent were white. Data concerning the social profile of the students revealed that 13,602 were recipients of public assistance, 2,316 were handicapped, 19,538 were immigrants, and 43,598 were unemployed. The number of contact hours per student averaged 66 hours and 40 minutes, with a total of 4,300 years of elementary education and 1,616 years of high school instruction provided. The following were among the goals achieved by program participants: 2,299 learned to read, 12,680 received high school equivalency diplomas, 4,977 went on to further education and training, 345 became U.S. citizens, 3,617 unemployed participants found jobs, and 1,727 received a job upgrading or salary increase. The cost of the literacy education services provided averaged $2.17 per hour or $160 per diploma. (MN)
