Designed to assist the House Select Committee on Aging in determining how technology can be utilized to improve the quality of life for the older population both now and in the future, this hearing was convened for five specific reasons: (1) to identify applications of technology for the benefit of older persons and mechanisms for their development; (2) to educate Congress and the public about the various technologies that can benefit the elderly; (3) to increase public awareness of the ways technology could facilitate daily living for older persons; (4) to learn about the problems that could inhibit technological developments; and (5) to determine whether market forces can adjust to the economic and ethical consequences of applying such technology. Two panels, consisting of witnesses from the American Association of Retired Persons, Palo Alto Veteran's Administration Medical Center, University of San Francisco, Drexel University, Miami Jewish Home and Hospital for the Aged, and representative senior citizens, presented testimony on the impact of such technologies as robotics and microcomputers on health care delivery and quality of life for senior citizens.
