Goals and Strategies for Teaching Physical Education.
Hellison, Donald R.
This book offers an alternative set of goals for physical education focusing on human needs and values rather than on fitness and sport skill development per se. The first chapter provides an overview of goals and strategies that respond to the trends in society that currently confront students. Descriptions are given of the developmental levels of children (irresponsibility, self-control, involvement, self-responsibility, social responsibility) and the needs of the individual at each stage. Chapter two describes effective teaching strategies: teacher talk, modeling, reinforcement, reflection time, and student sharing. Chapters three through six describe strategies for each developmental level. The final chapters discuss limitations to this model and offer closing reflections. (JD)
