This report summarizes results of a survey of states, teacher centers, and professional organizations on the status of teacher inservice and staff development. The 43 states and the District of Columbia that responded to the survey have a state level plan for both inservice and professional development. Some, by law, require implementation of the plans, others are guides for local districts that must develop their own systems and provide local funds. Most of the states have a state department, division, or individual in charge of professional staff development and state-wide inservice training. Many also have mandated a specific number of hours required for inservice training, often tied to recertification requirements. The survey revealed that there are 90 formerly federally-funded Teacher Centers still existing. Most have greatly curtailed activities. Thirteen of the Centers responded to the survey, and it is inferred that this movement is on the wane if not already gone. Eight professional groups were consulted to see how they viewed their participation in inservice education. The commonality among the responding groups is to provide assistance as part of a professional team. A summary is offered of responses from each of the states, professional organizations, and teacher centers. (JD)
