Designed for use by elementary and secondary teachers but useful to anyone interested in Islamic art, this booklet considers the ways in which design issues have been solved in Islamic cultures, both in the past and the present. The text covers two major areas: aspects of pattern in Islamic weaving and aspects of Islamic tilework. Under weaving the following topics are covered: prayer and pilgrimage, Islamic pattern, the Koran, the Mihrab, the Hajj, a pattern of life, woven architecture and artifacts, pattern in Islamic rugs and carpets, design, knotting, texture, color, the loom, motifs, and court carpets. Under tilework the following topics are covered: environment, geometry, color, arabesque, calligraphy, figures and animals, techniques, the Seljuks, Ottoman Turkey, Mongol Persia, and Spain and North Africa. Worksheets focus on student work with Islamic motifs and clay work. They are designed to involve the students in understanding the principles and techniques of Islamic design. Throughout the book the religious belief systems underlying design ideas are covered as well as environmental issues and lifestyles. The book concludes with a glossary, a list of additional resources, and a bibliography. (IS)
