Science for Students with Visual Impairments.
Ricker, Kenneth S.
This paper examines various aspects of teaching science to visually impaired students. It is based on the premise that students with visual impairments should acquire scientific literacy and should be encouraged to pursue science-related careers. It is not designed to make science teachers specialists but to increase their awareness to the unique needs of visually impaired students. Topics addressed include: (1) curriculum efforts to develop alternative teaching methods and materials (such as Adapting Science Materials for the Blind (ASMB), Science Activities for the Visually Impaired (SAVI), and the Student Science Teaching Program in Marine Science for the Handicapped program; (2) the identification and selection of alternative techniques, focusing on close-up tasks, near-by tasks, distance tasks, and mobility tasks; (3) ways of providing hands-on experience and laboratory activities; (4) safety considerations related to mobility and orientation, using new instruments and techniques, work stations, and eye and face protection; (5) career education (which includes short descriptions of five visually-impaired individuals in the sciences); and (6) the use of computer technology in teaching science to visually impaired students. References to programs discussed and a list of resources are included in two appendices. (JN)
