Utilizing Community Resources to Decrease Unsupervised Television Viewing by Kindergarten Children.
Richards, David M.
The goal of this practicum was to teach parents ways to supervise the kinds of television programs their kindergarten-aged children watch and to limit the time they spend watching them. Attempts were made to advise teachers about ways to supplement information provided to parents about educationally sound and appropriate programs for children. The educational intervention for parents consisted of four meetings in which children, parents and teachers participated and interacted with guest speakers from the community and television studios. Discussion focused on data gathering in session 1, on neighborhood programs for children in session 2, on best children's programs on the available channels in session 3, and on individual participant's opinions and feelings about the sessions in session 4. Data were gathered through a Parental Television Questionnaire, a Teacher Television Questionnaire, and a Student Oral Television Questionnaire. Pre-questionnaire results indicated that 80 percent of the kindergarten children devoted a large portion of their time to unsupervised programming. Post-questionnaires were expected to indicate that 80 percent of the respondents curbed television watching and that television programming for students was more closely monitored by parents, faculty, and students. According to post-questionnaire results, positive attitudes toward monitoring television viewing increased by 80 percent. (Author/RH)
