Information from 1983 Oklahoma City Community College Graduates. Research Monograph I.
Shirazi, Annmarie
In May 1984, questionnaires were sent to all students who graduated from Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) between December 1982 and July 1983. A total of 387 questionnaires were mailed, soliciting information on educational objectives, current educational/employment status, college major, ratings of college services, transfer experiences, and occupational experiences. Study findings, based on a 42.9% response rate, included the following: (1) in comparison to previous years, the proportion of students attending OCCC to improve their job skills decreased for the second year in a row; (2) a decrease was also seen in the proportion of students planning to transfer, while those seeking job preparation and attending for personal enrichment increased; (2) the percent of the respondents employed part-time increased for the second consecutive year, while those employed full-time rose to previous levels from the all-time low of 56.7% in 1982; (3) the quality of instruction was rated good or very good by 92.2% of the respondents; (4) 16.9% of the respondents indicated that they had returned to school at OCCC following graduation; (5) 8% of the transferring students in 1982 reported having problems, compared to 17.7% in 1983; (6) 49.0% of the employed graduates were working in a field directly related to their college major; (7) of the graduates who were not employed in an field related to their major, 16.9% had transferred to a four-year school, 10.2% were not sufficiently qualified for a job in their field, 6.6% could not find a job in their field, and 4.8% preferred to work in another field.
