Information from 1982 Oklahoma City Community College Graduates. Research Monograph I.
Shirazi, Annmarie
In May 1983, questionnaires were sent to all students who graduated from Oklahoma City Community College (OCCC) between December 1981 and July 1982. A total of 404 questionnaires were mailed, soliciting information on educational objectives, current educational/employment status, college major, ratings of college services, transfer experiences, and occupational experiences. Study findings, based on a 40.6% response rate, included the following: (1) in comparison to previous years, the proportion of students attending OCCC to improve their job skills and to prepare for employment decreased, while those looking to transfer to a four-year college and those attending for personal enrichment increased; (2) the percent of the respondents employed part-time increased from 9.9% to 13.4%, while those employed full-time fell to an all-time low of 56.7%; (3) the quality of instruction was rated good or very good by 89.7% of the respondents; (4) in 1981, 18.2% of the transferring students attended Central State University (CSU) and 30.7% attended the University of Oklahoma (UO); while in 1982, 37.5% of the students attended CSU and 26.2% attended UO; (5) 8% of the transferring students in 1982 reported having problems, compared to 16.5% in 1981; (6) 52.6% of the employed graduates were working in a field directly related to their college major; (7) of the graduates who were not employed in a field related to their major, 23.2% had transferred to a four-year school, 6.1% could not find a job in their field, 5.5% found a better paying job in another field, and 4.3% were not sufficiently qualified to work in their field. The questionnaire and item-by-item response data are included. (AYC)
