An Assessment of the Foreign Language Discipline in Virginia's State-Supported Institutions of Higher Education. A Report to the Council of Higher Education and Virginia's State Supported Institutions of Higher Education by the Task Force on Foreign Languages.
Virginia State Council of Higher Education, Richmond.
An evaluation report on foreign language activities in the 39 state-supported institutions in Virginia is presented. After an overview of the state of the foreign language discipline, extensive information is provided for the state's two- and four-year institutions on foreign language offerings, enrollments, degrees, class size, state aid, faculty, and other aspects of instruction, as of fall 1983. Major issues relating to foreign language education in the state colleges are also identified, and ways to address these issues are recommended. The recommendations cover areas such as: articulation, classical studies, curriculum, exchange programs, facilities, faculty, teaching assistants, foreign language requirements, study abroad, and teacher training. The first appendix is an evaluation of the foreign language activities in all 39 public institutions, for each of which information is given on admission/graduation requirements, enrollments, curriculum, faculty, institutional support, and interinstitutional and innovative activities. Additional appendices include: a summary of four regional hearings conducted by the Task Force on Foreign Languages, a description of foreign language developments at each institution since fall 1983; and a brief summary of action taken by the State Council of Higher Education on Task Force recommendations.
