Programming for Secondary Age Handicapped Students: Recommendations.
Maine State Dept. of Educational and Cultural Services, Augusta. Div. of Special Education.
This publication is intended to help local school systems plan, implement, and expand programs for secondary aged handicapped students in Maine's public schools. An introductory section examines four major factors: assessment, curriculum, personal and career development, and graduation. The next section contains detailed descriptions of 10 program options: (1) resource programs, (2) consulting teachers, (3) self-contained classes, (4) alternative learning programs, (5) work-study programs, (6) community-based learning, (7) vocational education, (8) job development, (9) sheltered workshops, and (10) residential and day facilities. Suggestions are offered for using community resources in programing, particularly Vocational Rehabilitation and services under the Department of Labor. A list of four personnel competencies is followed by appended material, which includes descriptions of program options in Maine. (CL)
