Since very little investigation has been made of stories told in organizations, a pilot study was designed to examine story types, values, and recurring themes in stories of a regional planning agency employing 21 staff members. In order to collect stories, tape recorded interviews were conducted with each staff member. Open-ended questions designed to elicit stories were used in these interviews. After stories were identified, they were subjected to content analysis. Study results showed that members told more relational than task stories, suggesting that members interpreted and assigned meanings to their work world through their relationships with other members. In addition, the stories reflected several common themes reflecting organizational concerns such as equality, security, and control. However, a number of concerns unique to the organization also emerged through common story themes. These centered on specific persons, relationships, and practices related to the agency. The findings support the notion that story telling does occur in conversations with organizational members and that common themes recur in these stories. (HOD)
