To identify and make available reading-related Bible references for reading teachers, a computerized text of the 1611 King James Bible was generated, using reading-related terms extracted from Bible concordances and student papers. Such words as "read," book,""word,""study," and "language" generated about 4,800 references. Thirteen annotated reference lists organized by topic were then constructed from those passages considered to have substantial relevance to the teaching of reading. The 13 topics included: reading teachers; importance of reading; reading purposes and promises; effects of reading; reading difficulty; language and words; reading comprehension; readiness; methods; research, writing, and publication; readability; reading and Christ; and censorship. The analysis revealed that those ancient societies of believers regulated their affairs, related to deity, and transmitted their values and heritage to succeeding generations through books and records. Reading and study were considered to have divine approval and provisions were made for the illiterate so they would enjoy the same benefits. Reading was also an active, searching process, closely equated with righteousness and was used in ceremonies of worship. Furthermore, it was through books of divine command and especially prophecy that the community maintained its conviction of a unique, favored status with God. (HOD)
