Work in Australia. Course HP05b: Part Time BA Degree Programme.
Griffith Univ., Brisbane (Australia). School of Humanities.
This course, one of 16 sequential courses comprising phase one of a part-time Bachelor of Arts degree program in Australian Studies, investigates work in contemporary Australian society, with particular attention paid to whether housework falls into the category of work, current economic crisis, the role of trade unions, and the effects of capitalism. The course is designed for independent study combined with tutorial sessions. Chapter 1 is an introduction to the course and its study objectives. Chapter 2, "The Shape of Work in Australia," gives an overview of the Australian economy and some issues in economic theory. Chapter 3, "Industrial Relations," deals with strikes and worker discontent. Chapter 4, "The Labor Process," covers theoretical perspectives on labor, and Chapter 5, "The Future of Work and Work of the Future" questions whether there will be enough work to meet employment demands in the future. Materials for tutorial one require students to examine news coverage of economic issues; tutorial two has students present a case for what is occurring in the labor force. Also included are lists of required readings, additional readings, a bibliography, and self-assessment questions. (IS)
