This course, one of 16 sequential courses comprising phase one of a part-time Bachelor of Arts degree program in Australian Studies, analyses how versions of the past are maintained through rituals and ceremonies, and through institutions such as schools and museums. It further develops the notion of identity, particularly as it applies to aboriginal and ethnic groups in Australia that maintain a sense of traditional identity. This course is designed for independent study combined with tutorial sessions. Chapter 1 is an introduction to the course and its study objectives. Chapter 2 covers multiculturalism and new relations between ethnic groups in Australia. Chapter 3 focuses on Italo-Australians and aborigines. Chapters 4 and 5 discuss tradition as a topic of inquiry and the concept of an institution. Chapter 6 considers ethnic institutions and organizations, specifically the Italian and Greek communities. Chapter 7 discusses rituals and ceremonies as the vehicles of tradition. Materials for three tutorial sessions cover self-assessment questions, problems with the course, and essay writing. Lists of required readings, additional readings, a bibliography, and self-assessment questions are also included. (IS)
