Law: The Language of Liberty. Supplemental Materials for Alabama Social Studies Teachers. Grade 9.
Alabama Administrative Office of Courts, Montgomery.
Student activity pages, teacher background information, and lesson ideas for teaching about law in social studies classrooms are presented. The first section, "Law and Alabama History," focuses on law at the state level. Included are a brief history of Alabama's court system and prison system, a summary of rules for safe driving, a law enforcement code of ethics, and suggested resources. Section II, "Law and Contemporary World Affairs," focuses on law at the international level. A suggested course outline is followed by a description of teaching units and recommended teacher-directed activities. Directions for an activity entitled "Travel Club" and a simulation activity illustrate both the need for laws and the importance of international cooperation. Although activities in Section I focus primarily on Alabama's legal system, they can be adapted for use in other states. Each lesson includes procedures and reproducible student handouts. (LH)
