Designed to introduce secondary school students to a variety of historical resources on local, family, and 19th century cultural history, the primary materials presented in this guide provide insight into the lives of one family, the D. H. Osbornes, who lived in Victor, New York, from the 1850's through the first half of this century. Based on a major exhibition and the collections of the Strong Museum (Rochester, New York), this resource book contains photographs of interior and exterior architecture of the day, family photographs, maps, and family papers. Each of the primary materials is accompanied by a "to the teacher" section as well as questions to guide the student's study. This booklet not only helps sharpen the student's skills in interpreting primary materials but also provides a glimpse of Victorian life in an upper middle-class household. The final section of the workbook, "Your House as History," applies the same method of inquiry to 20th century residences. This is intended as a summary exercise, with students documenting a modern house in order to contrast 19th and 20th century life styles. (Author/LH)
