Computer Awareness 4-6. Draft Pilot Guide.
Manitoba Dept. of Education, Winnipeg.
The second of three parts of a computer awareness program for grades K-9, this five-unit guide includes objectives, notes and explanations, and suggested activities for developing basic concepts, skills, and attitudes related to computer technology for grades 4-6. Student activity worksheets are included for each unit. Unit 1 covers care for a computer and its peripherals, and demonstrates simple trouble-shooting techniques and the use of the "immediate" mode. Unit 2 identifies the components of a computer and explains their basic operations. In Unit 3 computer components and processes are introduced and internalized through a variety of concrete activities, most of which do not require a computer. Modern calculators, electronic games, and toys are compared and contrasted to the computers, and computer capabilities and limitations are examined. Unit 4 describes the development of calculation aids from finger calculators to computers, emphasizing the increase in complexity and capacity of calculation aides. The final unit emphasizes the basic understanding that people make computers work. (LMM)
