Data on student participation in the College Board's 1984 Advanced Placement Examinations (AP exams) are presented. The tables show mean exam grades by subject and ethnic group for all candidates, males, females, grade 12 candidates, grade 11 candidates, and public school candidates. National data are also provided on reports designated for in-state and out-of-state colleges by exam grade distributions, subject, and ethnic group. Highlights include the following: in 1984, there were 176,282 candidates taking 236,599 AP exams; 53 percent of all AP exams in American history were taken by males, while 40 percent of exams in math/calculus AB were taken by females; 52 percent of all 12th grade candidates challenged the AP exam in English literature and composition; 31 percent of all candidates taking AP exams were secondary school juniors; 59 percent of students from the state who identified themselves as black designated in-state colleges to receive their AP grade reports instead of out-of-state colleges; 37 percent of all students with an AP exam grade of 3-5 designated an out-of-state college to receive their grade reports; and 74 percent of the public school candidates challenging the biology AP exam earned a grade of 3-5.
